Endress+Hauser Prosonic FMU41: Extended-Range Ultrasonic Level Measurement up to 8 Meters
Endress+Hauser Prosonic FMU41: Extended-Range Ultrasonic Level Measurement up to 8 Meters

More range for non-contact level and flow measurement
The Endress+Hauser Prosonic FMU41 is a compact ultrasonic transmitter for continuous, non-contact measurement of liquids, pastes and coarse bulk solids. With a liquid range up to 8 m, it extends the working range beyond the FMU40 while retaining straightforward commissioning and diagnostics.
FMU41 can be used in storage tanks, vessels with agitators, stockpiles and conveyor-belt applications. It is also suitable for flow measurement in open channels and at weirs. The two-wire or four-wire compact design integrates the sensor and transmitter in one instrument.
Why Choose the Prosonic FMU41?
Measures liquids up to 8 m and bulk solids up to 3.5 m for medium-size tanks, silos and channels.
The PVDF sensor remains outside the medium, reducing mechanical wear and simplifying maintenance.
A four-line local display, menu guidance and envelope-curve visualization support commissioning and troubleshooting.
How Ultrasonic Measurement Works
The sensor sends ultrasonic pulses toward the material surface and receives the returning echoes. The transmitter uses the measured time of flight to determine distance and calculate level. An integrated temperature sensor automatically compensates for temperature-related changes in the speed of sound.

Typical Applications
- Water and wastewater tanks
- Chemical storage and process vessels
- Liquids, pastes and slurries within the published limits
- Small to medium silos with coarse bulk material
- Stockpiles and conveyor-belt monitoring
- Open-channel and weir flow measurement
FMU40 or FMU41?
| Model | Maximum range | Blocking distance |
|---|---|---|
| Prosonic FMU40 | Liquids 5 m; solids 2 m | 0.25 m |
| Prosonic FMU41 | Liquids 8 m; solids 3.5 m | 0.35 m |
Installation and Selection Notes
Provide a clear acoustic path between the sensor and product surface. Keep the filling stream, ladders, heating coils and structural members outside the ultrasonic beam. The maximum level must remain outside the 0.35 m blocking distance. Heavy foam, dense vapor, strong turbulence, vacuum and severe temperature gradients can weaken the echo and should be reviewed during selection.
Information Needed for Correct Selection
- Medium name and whether it is liquid, paste or bulk solid
- Tank or silo height and required measuring range
- Process temperature and absolute pressure
- Foam, vapor, dust, agitation and filling conditions
- Nozzle size, mounting position and internal obstacles
- Hazardous-area approval, power supply and signal requirements
