Endress+Hauser Prosonic FMU40: Compact Ultrasonic Level Measurement for Liquids and Bulk Solids

Reliable measurement without contacting the product
The Endress+Hauser Prosonic FMU40 is a compact ultrasonic transmitter for continuous, non-contact measurement of liquids, pastes and coarse bulk solids. It is also suitable for flow measurement in open channels and at weirs.
For operators who need a cost-effective instrument with straightforward commissioning, FMU40 combines an ultrasonic sensor, transmitter and local display in one compact device. Typical duties include storage tanks, vessels with agitators, stockpiles, conveyor belts and water or wastewater channels.
Why Choose the Prosonic FMU40?
The sensor does not touch the medium, helping reduce wear and maintenance in many tank and solids applications.
Menu-guided local operation, a four-line display and visible envelope curves support setup and diagnostics.
Continuous level, volume and open-channel flow can be handled with a 32-point linearization function.
How Ultrasonic Level Measurement Works
The sensor sends ultrasonic pulses toward the product surface and receives the reflected echoes. The transmitter determines the distance from the measured time of flight, then calculates level from the configured empty distance. An integrated temperature sensor automatically compensates for temperature-related changes in the speed of sound.

Specifications and approvals depend on the selected order code. Confirm the current manufacturer documentation, medium conditions and installation geometry before ordering.
Typical Applications
- Water, wastewater and utility tanks
- Chemical storage and process vessels
- Liquids, pastes and slurries within the published application limits
- Small silos containing coarse bulk materials
- Stockpiles and conveyor-belt monitoring
- Open channels and weirs for flow measurement
Installation Points That Matter
Mount the sensor so the ultrasonic beam has a clear path to the product surface. Avoid filling streams, ladders, heating coils and other internal structures that can create false echoes. Keep the maximum product level outside the 0.25 m blocking distance. In vessels with agitators or irregular surfaces, use the envelope-curve display and false-echo mapping during commissioning.
Information Needed for Correct Selection
- Medium name and whether it is a liquid, paste or bulk solid
- Tank or silo height and required measuring range
- Process temperature and absolute pressure
- Foam, vapor, dust, agitation and filling conditions
- Nozzle size, mounting position and internal obstacles
- Hazardous-area approval, power supply and signal requirements
